Ph.D. Program Admissions The International Institute of Information Technology, Bangalore (IIIT-B), invites applications from qualified candidates for admission to its Ph.D. program in Information Technology. The Institute has close ties with the IT industry, and aims to be a nodal center for world-class research in different theoretical as well as applied areas of IT. The areas of research include: Algorithms, Communication Systems, High-Performance and Highly Available Systems, Wireless and Optical Networking, Software Architecture and Engineering, Distributed Computing, Mobile Computing, Database Theory and Management, Discrete Mathematics and Theoretical Computer Science, Digital Signal Processing, Ad Hoc Networks, Web Information Retrieval, Information Theory, Information Security, and the Political Economy of Information Technology. Ph.D. at IIIT-B The doctoral program involves required and elective coursework, passing of examinations testing the candidate's depth and breadth of understanding, and the writing and oral defense of a dissertation describing a significant body of original research. The duration of time required to earn the doctorate may be estimated as 3 to 5 years, depending on the topic chosen and the candidate. Who can Apply? The usual minimum qualification required is a 1st class four-year degree in a technical discipline (i.e., a 1st class B.E., B.Tech, or equivalent), but people holding 1st class Master's degrees in the mathematical sciences (e.g. an M.Sc. in mathematics, physics, statistics, or electronics) may also apply. Ordinarily, applications from candidates holding Master's degrees in a technical discipline (i.e. an M.E., M.Tech, or equivalent) will be preferred, but candidates who possess just the minimum qualification but show great aptitude for research may be considered. Such candidates may sometimes also be advised to pursue the M.S. by Research first, prior to being accepted into the Ph.D. program. For candidates applying to do research in the Political Economy of Information Technology, a 1st class Master's degree in social sciences (M.A. or equivalent in anthropology, business management, economics, geography, history, political science, sociology or related disciplines) is acceptable. Candidates with 1st class M.Phil. degrees are especially welcome to apply. For candidates applying to do research in Technology in Education, the usual criteria under ``Who can Apply?’’ are usually applicable, but candidates with first-class Master’s degrees in Education and a sound academic background in science and mathematics may be considered. Candidates interested in research in Technology in Education may be considered for a Ph.D. fellowship sponsored by HP Labs India. International Applicants International applicants who hold degrees from recognized universities abroad are eligible to apply provided they can demonstrate the research potential expected of successful applicants. International applicants will also have to rigorously comply with all relevant laws and governmental formalities concerning emigration and immigration. They are expected to fund their own travel, and may in some cases not be eligible for fellowships and scholarships.
