  3. From among the eligible candidates, those who achieve an aggregate CAT score equal to or more than the total cut-off score in the corresponding category, as mentioned in the table above, are shortlisted for GD/PI.

IIM Kolkata considers only CAT score for Personal Interview calls. The sectional cut off have been derived to ensure that the eligible students number is as per IIM C liking.

 Interpretation:

IIM Kolkata unlike all other IIM's focuses only on CAT score. There approach is good for the students who have just started to take their studies seriously as nothing is seen from the past. So a CBSE topper and a second division pass out have equal chances. Similarly an IITan or a distance learning student has same chances. Actually, IIMC is the only institute where a mediocre student can get admission.

PGDCM:

Candidates have been shortlisted for GD/PI based on CAT score, academic performance and relevant work experience provided they fulfill the minimum section-wise and overall CAT scores as given in the following table.

Analysis

IIM Kolkata has used only one criteria for Personal Interview calls that is :

CAT Score

Intrepretation:

  1. Unlike all other IIM's, IIM-Kolkata has given 100% weight to CAT score.
This is very significant. As there is no weight assigned to any previous academic background, a student with mediocre performance in the past still have equal chances for CAT call vis a vis a academic topper. So, if a student has just started taking his studies seriously, he/she still have chance to make to an IIM, something which other IIM's do not offer.

  2. Unlike IIM L and IIM K, no weight to work ex means that fresher's have equal chance to enter vis a vis students with work experience.

  3. Considering only CAT score can also mean that one day wonders can enter IIM C which is not in favour of consistent performers.

To summaries, we believe that IIM Kolkata is following the book. CAT was introduced as a common test for IIM selections and it is using only that as a first step. This procedure doesn't put any weight to any academic performance. So a student who never considered academics to be the only way to succeed in life (National player cricket player etc) have a fair chance to enter an IIM. Also, a long shot can be that this batch should produce maximum entrepreneurs.
